Really, that explains it. He'd been muddling through a vaguely depressed haze during that stretch, when he was trying to come to terms with the idea that Oz was gone forever. Staying close to family had been a good distraction, but the group chat was the furthest thing from his mind at that time.

But then Ange-well she went in to kiss me and it was like-You know like all emotional and crazy and I nearly kind of tripped over my own two feet,
except Oz stepped in and stopped us and totally blew our cover.
And like Ange was like really upset and ran off in the middle of me explaining it.
[The first part of that has Qrow thinking, oh, that's kind of nice actually, it makes sense Oz could help and it probably is different to show her how to make the adjustments she needs while viscerally aware of how her body works than any training anyone else could offer. Even if the thought is a little uncomfortable, that all seems pretty minor--but then she gets to the part about the kiss and his brain kind of grinds to a halt. Give him a moment here.]
