Character info

Character name: Qrow Branwen
Canon: RWBY
Canon point & release date: End of Volume 8, March 2021
History: History
CRAU (if applicable): n/a
Powers (no more than 150 words):

▶ Aura - Every person in the RWBY universe has the ability to manifest their soul for use in combat. It can function as a defensive shield, protecting one’s body from injury (albeit not pain) and healing it over time, as well as offensively project out as a shockwave.

▶ Semblance - Additionally, individuals in the RWBY universe can unlock a secondary dimension of their Aura, an ability unique to them. Qrow’s semblance--Misfortune--is a special case; unlike other semblances in the series, it is constantly active and uncontrollable in its effects, bringing bad luck to himself and everyone within his vicinity unpredictably. He is said to be able to amplify the extent to which this happens by spending his Aura, but it otherwise appears to be independent from the level of Aura he has.

▶Crow Transformation - Qrow is able to freely transform between a crow (with full flight capability) and a human.

Personality

What is your character most afraid of? How are they defined by this fear? (100-300 words)

Qrow's biggest fear is that he is at best a burden to his loved ones, and at worst will get them hurt or killed. As someone who is, quite literally, cursed with misfortune, he grew up isolated, rejected, lonely, and unhappy. His upbringing in a survivalist bandit tribe no doubt contributed to this, fostering a deep self-loathing and fear of being a burden--after all, only the strong survived, and his existence made their tribe’s survival all the more difficult. Indeed, he’s implied to have faced some degree of emotional abuse and neglect as a child, admitting at one point that nobody wanted him because he was cursed.

The scars of his insecurity and self-loathing linger even decades after tying his identity and sense of purpose to Ozpin’s war; we learn in Volume 4 that he actively hides the truth of his Semblance, never having told even his beloved nieces about it. He gets anxious and uncomfortable when pressed to explain why he attempted to protect Ruby and her friends from a distance without revealing himself, rather than traveling together, and almost immediately goes off alone on a walk after the admittance to avoid dealing with the group’s reaction.

Despite having become a well-respected Huntsman, he still seems to fear not only rejection, but also the misfortune his Semblance brings, and so he holds himself apart, tries to protect everyone from the shadows. He acts immature and irreverent, arrogant and cocksure, so as to build walls between himself and everyone else, keep things from getting too serious or close. Moreover, he’s prone to deep depressive spells where he isolates himself, leaning fully into cynicism and fatalism and rejecting efforts to pull him out of it, retreating further into his alcoholism as an escape instead.

What is your character's greatest desire? How are they defined by this desire? (100-300 words)

Qrow has always desperately sought a sense of belonging in the world, ready and willing to give everything of himself to anyone who will have him.

Given the way the bandit tribe operated, it’s likely that Qrow taught himself early on how to make himself useful enough to be worth keeping around, and that this need to compensate for his cursed nature made him relatively easy to manipulate. He's sent by the tribe to become a spy at Beacon Academy and learn how to kill Huntsmen, but soon ends up instead in the headmaster’s trusted inner circle and his own spy in his shadow war against Salem at the first blush of an offer of acceptance and belonging.

For all that he tries to hold himself apart, Qrow is powerfully loyal to those he loves, and as someone who craves belonging, he always finds himself coming back to those people and places to support them as best he can, even if he fears lingering for long. It’s both his greatest strength and often a deep vulnerability; when he offers someone his trust, it's absolute, which can make him unable (or unwilling) to see fault in them, so it is crushing for him when the reality becomes undeniable.

Yet as much as his love can be blind, it’s also deep and defining; once, Ozpin reached out and redefined family for him, giving him the opportunity to choose a new path. He went from being part of a group that took advantage of the weak and the suffering to someone willing to stand up and protect them instead. Even when those foundations are rattled and broken, it’s that love for his chosen family and the institutions that first gave him a home that allows him to find the strength to carry on.

How will not having memories change your character? What core personality traits, if any, will change? How? (200-300 words)

Qrow will not remember his semblance or any of the guilt or self-loathing surrounding it that's defined his life, nor the associated anxiety and hypervigilance. He will enter Well assuming himself to be overall an ordinary, unremarkable man and explore its challenges and mysteries without that weight on his shoulders informing his every decision. The loss of his memories also means he will no longer be saddled with the trauma of multiple significant betrayals, including the revelation that he was lied to for 20 years about the nature of the war he devoted his life to and to which a member of his family was a casualty. He will therefore have a lot fewer reservations about extending his trust to others, and be more inclined toward teamwork as opposed to flying solo. Also, although he will be aware of a vague sense of loss, he will not have the experience of the specific grief and lack of closure of Summer's disappearance, nor of spiraling into depression and alcoholism over 12+ years. Further, he will be lacking the context of a world in which feeling negative emotions too strongly can draw Grimm upon you, so he will generally be in a position to handle problems in a healthier way at Well.
