[It was a few days. Neo hadn't yet settled in. She'd been going back and forth to the beach every so often, looking around. She'd talked to his niece. She was finally coming to terms a week in that she needed a place and needed to talk with Qrow, because Emerald wasn't here.]
So, I've been meaning to talk. You're going to want to know where I am living these days aren't you?
[No chitty chatty. She was going to get to the point pretty quick. It wasn't exactly like she and Qrow ever got buddy buddy the way Emerald had.]
[By this point, Qrow properly remembers the things he'd learned from Ruby about what happened back in the Vault. And this text just reminds him that he has to deal with one of the reasons his Remnant counterpart may need to grieve both his nieces on top of everything else. It still stings under his skin that Yang isn't here with them, either.]
am i maybe i just don't want to see your face ever again
[This may not be the most productive answer but he's going to be petty first.]
Ah You talked to Red. I wouldn't exactly blame you for feeling that way about me. This isn't about social calls, Qrow. You might have to put me down at some point. Knowing my address is just simpler.
[Was she apologizing? Well, she felt remorse, but she didn't see any point in apologizing just now. It wasn't going to bring Yang back, or change the fact that she and Ruby were falling to what might be their deaths. She couldn't change that, and any apology felt hollow.
And unlike Ruby, she highly doubted he wanted to hear it.]
You have been invited for Ruby Rose's birthday party!
The party will be held at the house Ruby lives in over in the Gaze district. [ This is a mass text, so there's directions included.. but, well, obviously Qrow knows where it is. ] Feel free to dress up or not - you know Ruby won't mind either way. You're also free to bring a present if you want to. If you want to bring one, but you're having trouble thinking of what to get her, you can ask me, I guess.
.. Or Oscar. Actually, ask Oscar.
[ Please don't make her talk to people. ]
Let's do our best to make it fun for Ruby. She's had a really crappy time around this time last year, and I know she would love to be surrounded by her friends.
( ooc: the log for the party can be found over here! )
[this is a bold text, coming in near the wrong side of dawn on the 15th. she's been up all night and she's been through the emotional wringer. honestly, she's not really expecting a reply; she doubts she left much of an impression on him. but whatever, she's doing it anyway.]
Hey Q. It's that robot chick with two souls inside her.
Heard from someone you were working on staying sober.
I just fell off a couple weeks before my three-year mark. If you wanna talk about how to make it through, or whatever.
[...Huh. Qrow does in fact happen to be awake when this text comes in; he and sleep have never been on particularly the best terms. Their truce may be an uneasier one than he has with even Neo. Which is to say, he had a wholeass nightmare, flew around the property as he typically does on such nights, and is currently hanging out on a balcony to watch the sunrise before he makes his next attempt at rest. Idly scrolling the Omni in the meantime makes a decent distraction.
The text, however, is far from what he might expect. Qrow doesn't know Anna very well, of course. They've only had one real conversation, save any had in passing on Ruby's birthday. And to be approached about this of all things -- he wonders, briefly, if Ruby is worried about him, or maybe Oscar. Or maybe they're worried about her, in which case this is, honestly, a lot of fuckin' responsibility and he takes an entire moment to be stressed out about it. Hell, the only other person in Trench he knows for certain to have similar problems with alcohol is Charlie, who is far too deep in it to be reached.]
...been about a year and a half for me are uh are you asking for advice, or
[He's white-knuckled his way through for so long now it's a little strange to think about actually discussing it with someone who's currently struggling through it. Ozpin has had lifetimes to sort himself out, after all. A couple of years, on that scale, is nothing.]
[that's an immediate, forceful, and probably obvious lie. that was the whole reason NP told her to start talking with qrow in the first place. but it's fine.]
I think the one who told me might've wanted me to talk to you about it? See if you needed any help getting by. Or just someone else to commiserate with about it. I don't know. Misery and company and shit.
I've had a night and I'm just taking everyone's suggestions, I guess.
Hey, so I've been keeping my distance. I know you would really rather I keep doing that, and I respect that Qrow. But there's something we should probably talk about, just briefly.
First caveat: No, I did not stab anyone or murder them. It's nothing like that, for once in my life. But it's important.
(OOC: Her contacting him to tell him that she and Rubes are thinking of a bond, which can quickly segue into his own needs.)
[Yeah, she'd be contributing to the chaos eventually in her own way. Soon enough. For now, however...]
Not so much that something happened as she and I were talking. These bonds that people make around here, there's some weird ones out there. One of them's for people who are enemies and rivals.
[ Boy, that last training session was a grand old disaster - which would be fine, if Alice had gotten her money's worth out of it. (she does not pay him) (the money is figurative) (she pays him in attention which is tbh more rare and valuable than gems and shit) too many drills! not enough exciting new stuff! and more pressingly... ]
KROW YOU SUCK
i can't do my dumb practice homework stuff do you know why????
[The insult and the misspelling pretty much bounce off him, honestly, not least because he's been aggressively having echoes of that kind of feeling all month. The corruption train has definitely left the station and it is not coming back anytime soon.
He almost considers not answering the message, but -- well, she's one of Break's. And he promised to watch their backs when things got rough. Even if he can't ... seem to even get it right with his own household right now.]
go ahead and tell me
[That. Does not sound particularly sassy or irreverent, huh. Does not help the generally "off" vibe birb-sensei has had recently.]
[Some hours after the silly rumors post has died down, late, late at night, Qrow receives a text from a certain omen. Baltus has claimed his own username now, but quite frankly is as easy to spot as his person.]
xErxes lauhged often tonight and smiled more now heis sleeping soundly.
he is someon e who cares so fort he young ones that he forrgets to be cared for in turn To lure him out to play as you did was a good idea
[Qrow, meanwhile, has the look of someone who just woke up from a nap -- largely because he did. The Omni may or may not have fallen on his face. How unfortunate.]
What's up kiddo? This the kind of talk that's best with cookies?
Before I answer that, is there anything Xerx or I ought to know?
[Like sketchy people who may or may not be trying to take advantage of a small child and therefore need to be 1) humiliated by said child 2) gently fucked up by his not-uncles.]
[Break is faffing about in the game room when it hits -- one of the strange, warped bursts of false memory that has broken free of Never Mind's books. It's very like a dream, in a way. Break is not himself in this "dream" at all, but exists within it as though he has always belonged in the world it unfolds for him, with a different history and set of motivations in life that he just knows without question. That's not unusual at all, for something intricate that isn't actually a flurry of a nightmare.
What's striking is that when he "wakes up", Break is still sitting upright in the mess of jigsaw puzzle pieces he's trying to sort out in the wake of the Alices' last midair hair-pulling spat, never having truly fallen asleep at all...and the experience he's just lived through in his mind was the fall of Beacon Academy in Remnant.
For several long moments Break just sits where he is, sorting himself out, trying to figure out just how "real" the dream may or may not have been. His body certainly doesn't have the residual aches and pains it should have after dashing around in chaos like that, but then again he did have a proper Aura, so -- ah, and there are names he's heard in passing that have faces now? Things he wouldn't have been able to envision for himself a year ago that he now sees in his mind clear as day, and watching movies shouldn't have been enough to let him dream that up. And no matter how he looks at it, Break just can't shake the feeling that there are certain things he understands now that he really didn't before, and he can't extricate himself from that notion on his own.
What Qrow will feel through the blood bond is a shock of surprise and confusion, followed by a long stretch of somberness. Then, outright sadness, but tinged with a deep admiration. At last, Break abandons the puzzles on the floor and heads out to find his lover, and get to the bottom of just what is "true" and what is not.
He aims for the kitchen first. Not because he can sense Qrow's location through the power of their bond or anything, but because Qrow sure does love his snackies, and the kitchen and his favorite naptime couch are always the first places to look. Sometimes there's nothing magical at all about "just knowing".]
[Qrow is still getting used to the way the bond brings with it these little jolts of emotion, but what makes them comforting in their own way is that they belong to someone he is so thoroughly ensconced with -- a reminder that it is a two-way connection, of something shared between the two of them. He remembers telling Ange once of his hesitation to bond with Ruby, to lay the everyday reality of his mental state upon her shoulders. It feels less of an imposition with Break, who has shared so many of his experiences and struggles already.
So when he feels that burst of shock and confusion in the back of his mind, he jerks upright from the nap couch where he was simmering in that pleasant post-nap state between sleeping and waking, and himself goes looking for his lover. It's funny how their thoughts run on similar tracks here, even without their bond at that level -- Break can often be found in the kitchen as it is His Domain in this place, the part of the house he has claimed as his own over and above everywhere else. The place where he had brought Qrow that day to show him he was always welcome in his home.
His brow is mildly furrowed in concern as he finds him, even as the feelings through the bond settle into somberness, sadness, and finally admiration -- which elicits a flicker of confusion in return, not sure quite what he's done to earn such just now.]
[It was one of her usual trips out to the shore. She made them fairly often to make sure new people found their way in safe and sound. But that wasn't the only reason she did it, she had to keep an eye out to see if anyone else from home would come. Yang, Weiss, Blake. Anyone else from Remnant would be a welcome sight at this point. It had been so long since she last had the chance to see, hold, or laugh with her teammates.
It was a loneliness she thought she had learned to live with- But she felt it growing ever larger. Almost- All consuming.
...And that's when she vaguely realized that she couldn't move. She was stuck on the boardwalk looking out over the ocean before her. Cape billowing dramatically in the afternoon wind.]
[Qrow, too, finds himself going out to the beach at least once a month. It's been years since anyone from Remnant has shown up, either in Trench or in the dream, but the possibility draws him out again and again. Sometimes he even dreams about it, flying out over the shore as a squid reveals itself as Yang, or Tai, or even Summer.
This afternoon isn't motivated by one of those dreams; it's merely that time of month, as it were, and Qrow figures that makes it a particularly good time to get himself some funnel cake to take the sting out of what's certain to be a fruitless effort.
So it's thus that he's walking down the shore, munching on his pastry, when he spots not a new squid, but Ruby on the boardwalk, gazing out into the distance. He does not immediately register that she's frozen, though, and simply parks his butt down beside her, offering her some funnel cake.]
Hard to believe it's coming up on two years since the dream collapsed, huh?
Least favorite neighbor in the world calling. Uh, ok, so I try very very VERY hard to stay out of all of your business collectively. But, please tell me you have a damned clue what's going on with Red and Ange?
Cause this is getting weird and I'm starting to freak out a little.
